Maintaining the Mighty Mo
December 2002
Early in 2002, when it was my turn to choose the next vacation, I was
browsing through the Elderhostel
catalog and found an intriguing looking program. It was to be our
first "Service" program with Elderhostel and it would be in Hawaii in
December - how bad can that be? I had always had a fondness for
the USS Missouri, maybe stemming from the model I built of her as a
boy. Anyway, the prospect of spending nearly two weeks visiting
and volunteering on her was just too much to pass up!
BB63, the official designation of the USS Missouri is now stationed at
Pearl Harbor under the care of the USS
Missouri Memorial Association, Inc. It is open for public
tours. We went aboard as volunteers to the University of Hawaii
at Manoa, the program coordinator for Elderhostel. Although we
had time to sightsee downtown, participate in evening programs and tour
the ship, the photos below concentrate on the service part of the
program and the work we did.
