The majority of the crew worked to restore a section of the teak
decking. The teak, about two inches thick, is held to the steel
hull by bolts recessed into the decking and covered by teak plugs.
These plugs, having been installed some 60 years ago, were beginning to
deteriorate and come loose, accellerating the decay of the deck
itself. Our first task was to drill out the bad plugs and remove
the nut and bolt under the plug. Once the plug was drilled out,
the fastener was unscrewed using the specialized tool shown here.
Sometimes the air chisel was required to help it along. We usually
had two crews drilling plugs.
