A voyage to remember!

The Californian. currently a part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, is a replica of the 1847 Revenue Cutter, the C.W. Lawrence.  Between September 8 and 17, 2003 she sailed from Oakland's Jack London Square to Long Beach.  It turned out for us to be a voyage to remember for the rest of our lives.

Californian at Jack London Square
The Californian prepares to depart from the pier at Jack London Square, Oakland, CA on September 8, 2003.  We had been aboard the boat before but life is so different from one's normal existance that it takes a lot of getting used to.  Someone described it as "camping without the dirt and ants".  All but one of the sixteen bunks in the main cabin are filled with passengers eager to get underway.

The boat is on its first extended voyage under the ownership of the Maritime Museum of San Diego.  This homeward bound leg will take us through the Golden Gate and down the California coast to the Channel Islands National Park.  We will also visit Santa Barbara and Catalina before we disembark in Long Beach.

Our crew is a group of dedicated, experienced and enthusiastic sailors, many of whom are volunteers.  They are all eager to make us feel at home and to teach us the skills we need to become tallship sailors ourselves.
Hourly positions were recorded in the ship's log and were used along with other information to create this plot of our route.   Californian route

The early part of the voyage we focused on sail training.  Learning the names of the lines that make up the running rigging was a challenge that we slowly but surely overcame.

On September 8, 9 and 10 we had an exiting 47 hour down hill run from San Francisco Bay to San Miguel Island.  With 20 knot winds and 10-12 foot seas, it was a challenge for us land lubbers just getting our sea legs.  But, it's what we came for!

On September 16 we day-sailed from Isthmus Cove on Catalina Island to test the wind and the skills we learned during the voyage.  The Tole Mour was out and the race was on!

Upon our arrival in Long Beach Harbor, we fired the great guns in a salute to the Queen Mary.

A special thanks to the Captain and Crew of the Californian.
