Lava Beds Sept 2004

After Labor Day 2004 we went on a week long camping trip to Northern California including Lassen National Park, Lava Beds National Monument and Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area.  It was good to get out of the SF Bay area heatwave and to higher altitude.  After a couple days camping at Lassen, we headed North to Lava Beds.  We had been there about 40 years before so we were looking forward to it again.  The park itself has matured and includes a newly completed visitor center and electric lanterns for cave exploration instead of kerosene!  We camped for two nights and did lots of lava tube exploration.  On  our way in from the North from Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, we hiked to the fire lookout in the park.  The view from there was spectacular.  When we left Lava Beds, we visited Glass Mountain Geologic Area and then had lunch at Medicine Lake after a quick Geocaching find in the area.  Here are photos from the Lava Beds and Glass Mountain visits.
