Here is the entrance to a typical lava tube.  We went back for perhaps 1/4 mile then turned around since there was no outlet.  Before entering any of the caves, visitors should stop by the visitor's center and check out lanterns for each hiker.  That way, if a lantern doesn't show up at the end of the day, the rangers know someone may be lost and can follow up.
