This photo shows the stone work of the inner ring of the fort and a portal (sally port, I suppose) through the wall to the next outer ring.  Walls were all dry stone construction, i.e. there was no mortar binding the stones togehter.  Larger stones were used at the bottom of the wall with smaller stones used above.
