What should my child learn in kindergarten?

Your child will learn to:

  • Listen to his/her teacher
  • Follow directions
  • Follow class rules
  • Get along with others

What skills will my child learn?

Skills that your child will learn are to:

  • Share with others and take turns.
  • Be creative with clay, crayons, paper, paste, paint and other paint supplies.
  • Use school equipment the right way and keep safe.
  • Talk in front of a group and speak clearly.
  • Be curious about learning.

What reading skills will he/she learn?

Your child will learn skills that will help him/her to read. He/she will learn to:

  • Know and draw upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Match sounds to each alphabet letter.
  • Know and use rhyming words.
  • Start reading words. Your child will learn to use the first letter and a pattern (like:man, pan, ran).
  • Know by sight words like: as, the, and, is.
  • Write all the letters and other words like bat, cat, and so on.

What about numbers?

Your child will also learn about numbers. He/she will learn to:

  • Count to 20.
  • Know the numbers by looking at them.
  • Write all the numbers up to 20.
  • Tell you what a square, circle, triangle, rectangle and diamond is. He/she will be able to name all the shapes.
  • Draw and cut out all the shapes.
  • Fiqure out where things go by grouping them by shape, size, texture and so on.

What about exercise?

Your child will be active in our physical education program. He/she will learn to:

  • Get around on the school playground.
  • Climb on the bars.
  • Swing on the swings.
  • Play with balls, blocks, jump ropes, and other things.
  • Your child will also have time to play with other children.
  • Your child will also participate in a regular program that emphasizes non-competitive activities that will foster cooperative learning and developmental self-esteem.

What can I do at home to help my child do great at school?

What is important is to make sure that your child:

  • Comes to school rested, having had a good breakfast and ready to learn.
  • Can tell others what he/she needs.
  • Can take turns with others.
  • Is curious and happy to learn new things.

Make sure that your child:

  • Eats healthy foods.
  • Gets enough sleep.
  • Gets to talk with you and others.
  • Has the chance to use his/her imagination.

You can help your child with basic learning skills when:

  • You let him/her help cook or do simple experiments.
  • Your child plays with blocks and puzzles.
  • You read to your child at least 15 minutes a day.

Learning to follow directions is a key to success in school. You can:

  • Teach your child to respect teachers.
  • Set limits. Have clear expectations of your child.
  • Teach your child to put away his/her things and take care of what belongs to them.

Here are a few other things that you can do together. They are fun:

  • Find the picture of the red beans on the can at the supermarket.
  • Think of ten words that rhyme with can.
  • Help them give the money to the cashier and count the change.
  • Start a collection - rocks, baseball cards, stickers, bottle caps, etc.
  • Let your child tell you a story.
  • Put a sticker on the calendar as each day goes by.
