SDAC Report

Thursday October 21st

Boring meeting, brief

Transportation costs for the district is a major concern $400K.  State pays only $200K annually.  The school district is left with a $200K bill at the end of each year.  This would amount to an annual cost of $125 per riding student.  John Bayless stated that the district has come out publicly more than once to state that a busing fee is not a good solution, but he qualified that other districts in the State of California do this as a result of financial burdens.

John Bayless requested the attendees at the SDAC to bring back the district's concerns (on the busing situation) to our site councils.  His hope was that we dialogue within our groups and perhaps come up with some creative ideas to offer as the district tackles the demographics, funding and hiring issues in this upcoming year.

Selecting of officers discussed.  Re-wrote part of bylaws to clarify representation, etc.

Next Meeting - December 2nd, 7 pm at district office

Barbara asked to have someone go along or take her place.  No action taken.

Budget

No new word on carryover or budget.

Principal's Report

We are not in the hole anymore.   CBEDS enrollment was higher 472/450  $4380.

Full in kindergarten - Need to notify parents.... if a child is gone for 30 calendar days, they will forfeit their spots.   Kings Mountain is the only place in the district that has space.  It will be tighter next year because of lack of funds.

FV is not overstaffed.  We are 1/2 a special ed. teacher low.  All 4th and 5th classes are over 32.

Board Meeting tomorrow night.

1.  Report on test data.  Our community doesn't expect to be below county in average test scores.  But we are below in certain areas.  This is alarming since 9 areas out of 20 in 2nd to 5th are below county averages (not by much though, <5 points).

2.  Will request a minimum day on April 4th to go to statistics training by Jim Cox.  It is already a minimum day for FV.

3.  Will also request approval to apply for a technology grant for teacher training.  Mike submitted current tech report as evidence.  The technology training will be for FV 4th and 5th grade teachers.  Grant is actually for 4th to 8th grade with a 10-to-1 students to computer requirement.   Computers have to be in the core classroom.   We will likely get some funds but will likely be only school in district to qualify because we meet the technical specifications.   $20 per student in 4th and 5th ($4000).   Mike would like to focus grant proceeds on basic computer training to automate Literacy and Math data gathering.

Change of Bylaws to add Vice Chair Responsibility as Parliamentarian

Approved.

Proposals to ED Fund

Discussed memo (see attached) requesting PE specialist funding.

 Site Council Training

Will try to coordinate site council training for January 12th or 19th.  Jolanda will try to get Chunya's site council to attend training as well though they are very busy with their own topics.  The point was made to invite the other Elementary Site Councils as well.

Next Agenda

Discussed the process for assessing the effectiveness of our Site Plan, one topic at a time.  Proposed Math first since our test scores show weakness there.  Another proposal to look at Reading, Language Arts since the District is still working on Math.

Proposal to develop a timeline for what we will do this year.
